Expand your picky eaters diet without compromising their relationship with food, or you

This workshop is for parents or caregivers of children 3+ who haven't had any success using traditional approaches to address picky eating & are looking for a supportive, relationship based approach that will deepen their connection with their child and naturally bring more variety into their child’s diet over time.

PICKY EATING PLAYBOOK ONLINE WORKSHOP

Date: Wednesdays in October
Time: 12:00pm EST
Price: $44.99

10/7, 10/14, 10/21, 10/28

You are worried that your child is not eating enough of a variety to stay healthy, but you don’t know what to do.

You’ve tried..

  • Asking them nicely
  • Being more strict
  • Witholding dessert or playtime until they meet your requirement
  • Hiding foods in other foods
  • Eating a wide variety of foods yourself to be a model

..and nothing is helping.

Here’s why you haven’t had any success - all of those strategies are built on the idea that picky eating is a behavioral issue.

Picky eating is much more than behavior.

In order to finally start seeing progress with expanding your child’s diet, you need to focus on their nervous system.

By honoring the nervous system & building safety around mealtimes, your child will have

the capacity to try new foods without any nagging, bribes, or shame from you.

But you need a strategic plan that you can carry out consistently. Luckily, we already mapped out a plan for you in The Picky Eating Playbook!

Food play

  • Introduce the key to expanding your child's diet: food play
  • Provide guidelines for food play so it doesn't end up in a food fight
  • Discuss what it is, why it's necessary for long term change with picky eating, and how to get started

WEEK ONE:

Lay the groundwork

  • Connect the dots between picky eating & nervous system dysregulation so your child can eat a variety of food and have enjoyable mealtimes
  • Identify ways to calm the nervous system so that your child can feel comfortable eating a variety of food
  • Teach you how to make a color coded food list so you know exactly where to start with increasing your child’s food choices

WEEK THREE:

Handling stress responses

  • Discuss how to explore foods your child usually refuses while keeping their nervous system calm
  • Highlight calming strategies to use when exploring foods that evoke a stress response
  • Introduce the concept of a fear plan so your child can feel safe when trying new foods

  • Establish ways to support each other moving forward

Michaelene S Kearney OTR/L

I'm an occupational therapist with advanced training in sensory processing and nervous system regulation, as well as training in a variety of feeding approaches.

I'm also a mom of a picky eater. When she was growing up I tried using a behavior based approach, playing the waiting game, decreasing pressure around mealtimes (without a plan for exploration), and we never saw meaningful progress.

My personal experience with picky eating inspired me to dig deeper and after 20+ years as an OT helping families I've created a framework that honors the nervous system and rewrites the stories picky eaters have around food so lasting change is possible.

Common Questions & Concerns

How long will it take to see results?

It's impossible to put a timeline on results, but it does take time. Addressing these challenges now will positively impact your child for the rest of their life. Even if you have to spend 1-5 years working through picky eating, when you compare this season to the grand scheme of your child's 80+ year life, it's worth it. The time will pass anyways, so you can choose to work towards improving things by starting small with the time you have, or continue to put it off.

If I let my child play with their food, I'm enabling bad manners

This is a common concern we hear from parents, and I don't blame you for being hesitant to let your child play with their food.

First things first, food play happens outside of meal times. We are not asking you to let your child use their fingers to pinch their food at the dinner table. In The Picky Eating Playbook we'll help you establish clear boundaries and provide 'rules of engagement' to keep things from getting out of control.

Food play is essential for growth. Your child needs to experience their food to signal safety to their nervous system. We encourage you to keep an open mind to food play.

This won't work for my child, they are too stubborn

I'll say it straight - it’s not going to work if you don’t think it will work.

This approach requires an open mind. If you value having a strong connection with your child, and you are willing to put in the work, I believe you will find The Picky Eater Playbook to be really helpful.

It's not going to be easy, but your child deserves a chance.

At Children In Motion, one of our core commitments (and something we believe to our core) is to view behavior as communication. Your child may be stubborn, but what if that stubbornness is actually covering up fear? What if they need help facing their fears to grow? It's worth a try!

What if I can't make the live workshop?

We understand that everyone has their own, complex schedules. If you are unable to join our live weekly meetings, we have solutions for you. You can submit any of your questions ahead of time and we will make sure to answer them during the live. We will also record our meetings and share the recording with the group so you can view the live at a time that works for you.

Enjoyable, stress free meals are possible for families struggling with picky eating.
