Using our approach our OT sessions incorporate movement, muscle work, and sensory experiences (that create just the right amount of challenge) to help your child reach their goals.
Michaelene has been a great therapist, friend, confidante, etc. for our daughter over the last few years. She’s always kind and has come up with creative ways (that are relevant to our daughter’s interests) to help develop her skills. - Doug N.
When you come into the clinic for your visit, normally we’ll start by checking in with you, the parent, to discuss any recent challenges or trends you have noticed that we could work on in our session.
Next, you can either hang out in the waiting room, or join us in the session (we actually would prefer it!). We’ll switch the focus to your child, connect with them, assess their level of alertness, and proceed with the session.
Chances are we'll talk back and forth with you during the treatment session to explain things, get a better overall understanding of all the moving pieces, and connect with you - because you are a part of the team too!
Once our time is up we will ask if you have any other questions & send you on your way. Each session is about an hour long. We will spend 50 minutes with your child, then reserve 10 minutes at the end to go over what we worked on with you.
Michaelene and other OT's that my son worked with were patient, fun, and family-centered in their treatment approach. They took the time to understand his individual needs. He made great progress and I would recommend Children in Motion to anyone looking for a caring, sensory-based approach to occupational therapy.
Children learn through play. In early childhood play helps us develop communication & language skills, motor planning, visual perception, problem solving skills, emotional intelligence, and executive functioning skills.
Play also directly impacts brain structure & functioning. When your child participates in play, their brain releases special chemicals that help maintain & develop neural pathways in their brain.
And not to mention - play is fun!
Through play we are able to build a trusting, safe friendship with your child so that when we ask them to do something challenging they can trust that they will be safe.
Children who feel safe are more likely to take risks, which is essential for skill development.
